Once the rider is in cooler temperatures, or if there is an added need to protect their face from debris, the chin and face shield can be locked in the down position to cover the face and neck.
The modular motorcycle helmets are a little more costly because of the added functionality, but because you are essentially getting multiple helmets in one, it is well worth the extra expense.
