How many miles does food spend on a container ship, cargo plane, and truck before it’s on your plate?
This is assuming that “the average American meal travels 1500 miles before it is eaten.”
Would 25% on container ship, 25% on cargo plane, and 50% on truck be a reasonable estimate?
if you’re talking about the USA. almost nothing by plane….except for all those lobsters on FedEx and UPS!….
by ship…….there is a tremendous amount of grain moved by barges on the Western Rivers…….very little port to port container ship traffic…
but everything else moves by rail from growing/harvesting areas to distribution centers..then by truck to retail outlets……so a can of corn or a slab of beef travels 95% or better by rail from the farm to the warehouse then the rest by truck to the market where you buy it.
