How to use router to prep door and jamb for strike plate?
I am a proud new router owner (set/plunge combo from Milwaukee). I have a fair amount of experience with most tools, but have just not had experience with routers.
I have used a hand chisel for most of my new doors’ hardware mortise prep. I want to use the router for the rest. Do I need to buy a jig for this? Can I just trace the plate onto the door and ‘free-hand’ it, or is that likely to lead to a mistake?
I didn’t get a lot from Google on this, so any help or pointers would be appreciated. Thanks!
Speaking as an experienced trim carpenter, yes you can free hand this and yes it can also lead to a mistake. If a router “grabs” it can just take off into your work. When free handing you will be well served to try on a scrap to develop a touch and to use your hand/ fingers as a guide – holding the base as well as providing a guide along the edge, your thumb towards you, first and or second fingers away as the base is somewhat cradled in the “web of your thumb and first finger. But honestly, I think you did this backwards. Using a combination square and utility knife to cut the outline is my approach. Then use a router to clean out the inside and the vast majority of the mortise. Then use a sharp chisel and utility knife to work the last little bit.
