KITCHEN TOOLS AND GADGETS
Kitchen tools are meant to enhance our lives. Making our work in the kitchen easier, save time, energy, and get a job done that we may not otherwise be able to do as well without a specific tool. Some people are gadget collectors, filling their cabinets with utensils and gadgets. That’s fine since cooking is a hobby for some and collecting the latest tool no different that people who collect any number of other things. For the sake of financial economy and good utilization of space let’s discuss some of the things that we really do need to stock our kitchens adequately and some things we want and may need, but are further down the list.
As we say, let’s start at the very beginning, and if you like make a check list for your own kitchen. You can not do without mixing bowls. Preferably in 3 sizes, stainless steel which are easy and cost effective to buy as a set. I like to add a heat proof glass mixing bowl too in case I need to use the microwave. Cutting boards in plastic or wood, but it’s actually nice to have one of each since a wood cutting board can do double duty as cheese serving board. Wooden and stainless steel spoons and spatulas. Tongs are useful for serving salads, and turning meat, and I prefer the type that locks in place.
In continuing our quest to supply a kitchen with the basic utensils, add measuring cups to the list. You will need a set of four dry measuring cups and at least one, 2 cup liquid measuring cup, and a 4 cup liquid measuring cup is very nice to have as well. Dry and liquid measuring cups are not the same so don’t try to interchange them. Don’t forget the measuring spoons which are usually inexpensive and sold as a connected set. Pot holders, oven mitts and kitchen towels I think are self explanatory. You’ll need a Colanders and you will want to add a strainer soon after. While one can get by without a colander for a while you eventually get tired of trying to drain something against the wall of the sink.
Burning food becomes a real possibility without a timer. Sometimes you have one on the stove or microwave and that will be fine, but if you have 2 things in the oven with different baking times you may need to have two timers available. Vegetable peelers are a high order necessity. Useful for peeling fruits and vegetables. Look for a comfortable handle and a sharp blade. I have touted the benefits of an instant read thermometer forever. The thought of serving guests an undercooked roasted chicken is horrifying. I also try not to poison people, so knowing your meat is in the temperature range for doneness is important. You frequently find the acceptable temperature ranges for meat on the thermometer holder itself, so you don’t have to always be looking up temperatures in your cookbook. Salad spinners are the best way to wash greens, and will do double duty by storing them in the frig as well.
There are several utensils and gadgets that you will eventually want and need. They include: whisks, a rolling pin, wire racks for cooling baked food, a zester, and a citrus reamer (I use mine all the time). When barbeque season comes around you will want skewers, grilling utensils with long handles and pastry brushes for basting. I would invest in the silicon variety as they are impermeable to heat. Last but not least, I would add a potato ricer to you list. Once you start to rice your potatoes you’ll never go back to old fashioned masher. You’ll produce a perfectly fluffy (not gluey) mashed potato every time…I swear!
