Duty Trash
All the files and folders that you delete in Mac OS X from Finder first go to ‘Trash’. This adds a level of protection against data loss in case of accidental deletion. But certain Trash problems may prevent you to access these deleted files and sometimes, the whole folder. The deleted file may refuse to go to Trash and delete permanently. Alternatively, you may find it impossible to delete files from Trash or experience that the deleted file reappears. The most common reason for such issues is inappropriate permissions. This might create critical data loss situations if the file deleted is of an important concern. However, you can recover such files from your last backup or by use of a Mac File Recovery utility.
For instance, suppose you delete a file on a Mac OS X based computer accidentally. You want to restore the file, but when you open the Trash, the file is not there. The file seems as it has not been moved to Trash and deleted permanently.
Cause
Incorrect permissions of ‘.Trash’ or ‘.Trashes’ folder can be the issue which may delete the file permanently without the user’s intervention. This can also cause problems, such as discussed above.
Trash folders reside either at home folder as ‘.Trash’ or root of your mounted drive as ‘.Trashes’. If the file being deleted is located at home folder drive, it moves to ‘.Trash’ folder or otherwise, to ‘.Trashes’ folder.
Solution
You need to first determine the folder in use. To do so, you can unmount the external drive(s), if any, and check the existence of files in Trash. If the files disappear, the folder is ‘.Trashes’ or in other case, is ‘.Trash’.
You can then use sudo rm -rf command to delete the troubled folder. Keep in mind to include the full path when deleting the ‘.Trashes’ folder. After this, you should log out and log in again to recreate the folder. These steps are applicable to solve all the problems associated with Trash.
To restore the accidentally deleted files previously, use your last backup. For any reason, if it is not applicable, you can opt for a third-party utility of File Recovery Mac.
